I’m Julia Hofmann — an experimental fine art photographer based in Berlin. My work doesn’t aim to describe reality in a straightforward way. Instead, it explores the invisible in-betweens: feelings, moods, and memories. I often work in a more abstract way, leaving space for interpretation.
I combine analogue and digital processes. Double exposures, camera movement, light, and altered negatives are part of my visual language. I’m drawn to experimentation and to finding new ways of working with the camera. I rarely begin with a fixed concept — I follow what emerges and let the work unfold step by step.
Alongside my fine art practice, I photograph for small businesses and work as a print and web designer. I’ve also recently completed a UX/UI design course, which I’m excited to keep developing. Even though photography and UX are different disciplines, they meet for me in the same place: observing carefully, listening closely, and shaping experiences that feel thoughtful and human.
I’m naturally a quiet person, and that shows in my work. I care about calm compositions, structure, rhythm, and visual balance — visuals that feel clear without being loud, and that leave room to breathe.
Before working in design and photography, I studied Sinology and Tibetology and lived in China for many years. Living abroad continues to shape how I see the world. I love experiencing different cultures and ways of living — it keeps me curious, and reminds me that there isn’t just one way to see, to feel, or to tell a story.
